I am a Chinese-Canadian woman who came to Canada at a young age with my family. I grew up in a “satellite family”, where my father stayed back in Hong Kong to work and provide for the family while my mother raised me, my brother and my sister in Canada. Moving to Canada has brought on many changes to my family. Through the thick and thin, the immigration experience has made all of us stronger and more independent. As a child, I witnessed how hard my parents worked and appreciate the sacrifices they made to provide for the family.

In my 18 years of working with people from diverse cultures, I agree with the saying that we are more alike than we are different as a human race, and that we do not necessarily have to belong to the same culture in order to understand each other and work well together. Throughout the course of my career, I have been able to relate to and work effectively with people from cultures such as Indigenous, Indian, Philippines, Bangladeshi, Caucasian, and Vietnamese.

Using my family’s immigration story, I have encouraged numerous families with similar experiences to find themselves, help them navigate two or more cultures, and lead more independent and fulfilling lives.

My journey of becoming a counsellor has helped me understand that there are always two sides to a coin. While hardships may be viewed as a deficit causing harm to one’s development; it could also be viewed as an asset, helping someone grow. I was gifted with an excellent long-term memory that allows me to access vivid details from my childhood – the good and the bad.

In my personal journey of growing and healing, I have learned that as a child, I was very limited in what I could do for myself. But now that I am a grown-up, a professional and a parent, I am able to use my expertise and voice to help children in a way that I was not helped. Not only that, I am also able to support parents bridge the gap with their children and create new pathways to enhance their communication.

When we work together, you may expect the following from me:

    • Permission to laugh and experience joy even while you are going through hard times

    • See the beauty around you and the silver linings in a difficult situation

    • Have the difficult conversations that you may have avoided all your life

    • Honest and constructive feedback that challenges your thinking and helps you grow

    • My commitment to you: I take all my commitments (personal and professional) very seriously. I am known as someone who perseveres. Once we start working together, I will do my best to be present and available for you.
